What Montreux is known for

Montreux Jazz, and the casino that gave us Smoke on the Water

The Montreux Jazz Festival was created in 1967 by Claude Nobs, with René Langel and Géo Voumard: three days and a ten-thousand-franc budget for the first edition, at the Montreux Casino. It is now the second-largest annual jazz festival in the world after Montreal, and it fills the Riviera for a fortnight every July.

On 4 December 1971, a fire destroyed the casino during a Frank Zappa concert. Deep Purple, in town to record, watched the smoke drift across the lake from the quays — a few hours later "Smoke on the Water" was born, one of the most famous riffs in rock history. The casino was rebuilt; the song went round the world.

During the festival the last trains are packed and taxis on the spot are scarce. Booking the return together with the outward trip settles it: a car committed at the agreed time, at the price shown before you book, to get back to Lausanne or anywhere along the shore.
