Le Mont is not one village but three, welded together by the city: Petit-Mont, Grand-Mont and Les Planches. The name appears in 1237 in the records, in the Latin form Monte super Lausannam — the mountain above Lausanne, which is what it has remained.
Two early medieval necropolises have been uncovered here, at Rionzi and Champ Baron: this hillside was inhabited long before the villas. The tram has run down to Lausanne since 1906, and it was from 1960 that the fields gave way to residential districts and to the business areas of Rionzi, Budron and La Clochatte. The Rionzi itself is the stream that runs down the slope; its name comes from the local dialect riontse, the bramble.
