At 1.93 km², Jouxtens-Mézery is one of the smallest municipalities in the canton — and one of the oldest: Mézery is recorded as early as 929 under the name Masiriaco, Jouxtens in 1223. Two farming hamlets where, over the centuries, the Lausanne aristocracy came to build its summer residences.
In 1698 the de Crousaz family obtained permission from the Bernese government to turn its grange into a château — and thus into the seat of a seigneury. Both residences were rebuilt in the 18th century, probably to the designs of Rodolphe de Crousaz, lord of Mézery and architect of several significant buildings in Lausanne. The 1754 bell tower served to summon the general council and to raise the alarm in case of fire.
