Lausanne to Geneva Airport: taxi, train or shuttle?

The train is direct, frequent and cheap. It is still not always the right choice. Here is the comparison we run ourselves when a customer asks whether a taxi is worth it — including when the answer is no.

The three options in one minute

Lausanne and Geneva Airport are about 60 kilometres apart on the A1 motorway. Three ways to cover them:

Train and shuttle timetables and fares belong to their operators and change: check them on the day with SBB or the company concerned.

When the train is the right answer

Let us be straight about it: if you travel alone, light, in daytime, and you live near a station, the train is unbeatable. It is direct, frequent, immune to traffic, and the ticket costs a fraction of a taxi fare.

We say so to our own customers on the phone. A company that claims a taxi is always the best answer does not deserve to be believed about anything else.

When the maths tips over

A taxi becomes rational — not merely comfortable — in five specific situations.

From two people upwards

A train fare multiplies by the number of travellers; a taxi fare does not. Lausanne to Geneva Airport is CHF 214 whatever the number of passengers, up to the capacity of the car. For two, the cost per head becomes comparable; for three or four, the taxi is often cheaper than the tickets, and you carried nothing.

With luggage

Two large suitcases, a cabin bag and a pushchair can be done by train. It is simply not an experience to wish on anyone at 5 a.m., stairs and platform change included. In a taxi it all goes in the boot and nobody carries anything.

For a very early or very late flight

This is our most common case. A 6:30 a.m. flight means being at the airport around 4:30 a.m. — and at that hour there is no train. A flight landing at 11:50 p.m., twenty minutes late, with a checked bag, often leaves you watching the last departure go. Our cars run all night, with no night rate.

When you are not starting from a station

The honest comparison does not run station to terminal, it runs from your door to your boarding gate. From Épalinges, Chailly, Le Mont, Belmont, Pully or Cully you first have to reach the station: count the bus or a first taxi, the wait, then the connection. A taxi removes that invisible half of the journey.

When being late is not an option

A meeting on arrival, a non-changeable ticket, a group check-in: a booked taxi commits a named car at a stated time, with the driver's number and live tracking on a map. That is insurance, and its price is known in advance.

How much time should you really allow?

The drive itself takes 45 to 55 minutes in normal conditions. Our own records give an average around 65 km/h on this kind of motorway run, slip roads included.

But the drive is not the only variable:

  • At peak hours — roughly 7–9 a.m. and 4:30–7 p.m. on weekdays — crossing Lausanne and entering Geneva can add 15 to 30 minutes.
  • On Friday evenings and the eve of school holidays, the A1 loads well beyond the usual peak.
  • In winter, snow or fog on the plateau slows everyone down.

Our rule, the one dispatch applies when you book: leave so as to be at the terminal two hours before a European flight and three hours before a long-haul, and add a thirty-minute margin at peak times. Give us your flight time when booking and dispatch works the departure time out for you.

The price, and how it is set

Lausanne centre to Geneva Airport is CHF 214 one way, for the car. Booked as a return in one go, the price per journey falls to CHF 171.

That amount is firm: it appears before you confirm and does not change afterwards. If there is a jam, if we have to go round by Nyon, if it snows — that is our problem, not your invoice. The price is the same whatever the hour: we have no night rate, no weekend rate and no surge pricing.

From another town the price changes with the distance. The simplest way is to ask directly: enter your address on the booking page and the amount appears at once.

The return leg: what to know

Two things matter on the way back.

Book the return in the same booking. It is cheaper per journey, and it spares you hunting for a car as you come out of customs with jet lag.

Give us your flight number. It lets us track the actual landing time: if you touch down forty minutes late, the driver leaves later and you pay no waiting. Without the flight number we can only trust the scheduled time.

The pickup point at Geneva Airport is signposted; your driver texts you their position and number as soon as they are there.

What about other airports?

From Lausanne, Geneva is the natural airport. But we also drive regularly to Zurich, Basel-Mulhouse, Bern, Milan Malpensa and Lyon Saint-Exupéry, usually for routes Geneva does not serve, early-morning connections, or groups with a lot of luggage.

These journeys are booked in exactly the same way, at the same per-kilometre and per-minute rate, with the same price, quoted in advance. The airport transfer page has the detail.

Frequently asked questions

Your questions, answered

How much is a taxi from Lausanne to Geneva Airport?

The ride costs CHF 214 one way, for the whole car and whatever the number of passengers. Booked as a return, the price per journey falls to CHF 171. The amount is firm: quoted before you confirm and unchanged afterwards.

How long does Lausanne to Geneva Airport take?

Between 45 and 55 minutes in normal conditions, and up to about 1 h 25 at peak times or in bad weather. We advise being at the terminal two hours before a European flight, three before a long-haul.

Are there taxis to the airport at night?

Yes, around the clock, with no night rate. It is in fact our most common case: early-morning flights leave before the first train.

Is a taxi cheaper than the train for a group?

Often, yes. A train ticket is per person, a taxi fare is per car. From three travellers with luggage the taxi is frequently cheaper, and nobody carries a suitcase.

What if my flight is delayed?

Give us your flight number when booking: we track the actual landing time and the driver leaves accordingly. You do not pay waiting caused by the aircraft's delay.

Can I bring skis or oversized luggage?

Yes. Mention it when booking so we send a suitable vehicle — estate, people carrier or a van seating up to eight — and the price shown before you confirm already accounts for it.
