A funicular climbing from the lake to Mont-Pèlerin since 1900
Since 1900, the Vevey–Chardonne–Mont-Pèlerin funicular has climbed from the shore of Lake Geneva to the summit, crossing the Lavaux terraces. The municipality wanted it badly: in 1898 it voted 20,000 francs towards its construction — a considerable sum for a village of winegrowers.
Chardonne's territory rises from the lake to Mont-Pèlerin, and its vineyard runs from Saint-Saphorin to Corseaux, from the water's edge up to the forest. At the top, the view takes in the whole upper lake and the Dents-du-Midi.
The funicular closes in the evening, and the Mont-Pèlerin road is long, narrow and full of hairpins. Dinner at the top, a train at Vevey below: that is exactly the gap we fill.
