Born from the break-up of a larger municipality, in 1824
Forel did not always exist on its own. Until 1824 it was part of the larger municipality of Villette, under the name "les Monts de Villette". That year the settlements making it up took their independence, and Villette split into six municipalities: Villette, Grandvaux, Cully, Riex, Épesses and Forel. Forel's first authorities took office on 1 January 1826.
The oldest document naming it dates from 1140. In 1298, Pierre and Garnier de Palézieux bought the hamlet and the surrounding forests from Louis I of Savoy. Today the municipality covers 1,844 hectares, between Jorat and Lavaux, with views of the Fribourg Prealps, the Alps and the lake; its centre, at Cornes de Cerf, brings together the school, the church and the administration.
