The name tells its origin: Cella Santi-Laurenti de Montprevero in a charter of 1177, then Mon Presbiteri in 1228 — the mount of priests. There stood a priory of Augustinian canons regular, dependent on the house of the Great St Bernard.
The village sits on the eastern slope of the Jorat, just past Chalet-à-Gobet as you climb from Lausanne — in other words on the far side of the pass.
