The village where Corto Maltese looks out over the lake
Hugo Pratt, the Venetian who created Corto Maltese in 1967, spent his last years here among the Lavaux vines. He died in 1995 and rests in the village cemetery, above the lake.
Since 2007, a statue of Corto Maltese — by the sculptors Livio and Luc Benedetti — has stood in the heart of the village, facing Lake Geneva in the pose of a sailor waiting for a ship. His last home has become the Caveau Corto, where thirteen local winemakers serve their wines opposite the UNESCO-listed terraces.
