Mex has been a place of passage for a very long time. Roman remains have been found here, and in the Middle Ages it stood on the road from Lausanne to Jougne — the great route towards France, taken by merchants and pilgrims. The village formed a seigneury, and its fortified house came under the lord of Cossonay.
The name appears in 1154 as Mais, and the church of Saint Mary Magdalene was a parish church from 1228. The municipality also includes the hamlet of Les Esserts, perched at 560 metres on a hill between the Goille and Chamberonne valleys, plus several isolated farms.
