In 1744 a spectacular comet crossed the skies of Europe. The man who observed and described it most carefully was a twenty-five-year-old Vaud scholar: Jean-Philippe Loys de Chéseaux. The comet has borne his name ever since — and so this village's.
Cheseaux was built in the 10th or 11th century on the ruins of a Helveto-Roman settlement, near the north-south axis along which goods travelled from Italy up to the Hanseatic towns. Its château, south of the village in a wooded park, carries an 18th-century Mansard roof: one of the finest examples of French classical style in the canton.
