A Saint-Maurice cross inherited from a deed of 1180
The name Sullens enters history in 1180, through a deed restoring to the abbey of Saint-Maurice the property it held in the village. Eight centuries later, the trefoil cross of Saint-Maurice still appears on the coat of arms, adopted in 1919.
In 1665, the Bernese authorities granted Sullens and its lands to Jean-François Charrière: the village became a seigneury, and the Charrière band joined the cross on the shield. In the early 18th century, Jean-Rodolphe Thormann, of Bern's sovereign council, bought the seigneury and had the church rebuilt in 1712-1713.
