Excavations at Étagnières have uncovered Gallo-Roman forges, probably linked to the nearby villa of Buy, a Roman cremation cemetery, and the remains of a leper-house cemetery at the place called Maladaire — the name alone tells the story.
The village appears in 1202 as Etanneres. Its coat of arms says the rest: wavy bands for the name, which etymologists trace to the Latin stagnum, a pond; the colours of the lords of Chalon, who ruled the region in the 15th century; and a raven, keeping alive an old nickname for the inhabitants.
