An island built for birds, and closed to people
In 2001-2002, an island was built on the shore of Lake Geneva, between the mouth of the Venoge and Préverenges beach. Not to live on: for migratory birds. The Île aux Oiseaux is a cantonal nature reserve managed by the Lausanne Ornithological Circle, and access is forbidden — it is watched from the shore, through binoculars.
It was redesigned in 2020, and the Maison de l'île aux Oiseaux, an education centre facing it, opened in March 2022. A second stilted nesting platform was added in the winter of 2023-2024: in 2024, 129 terns and 206 gulls were born there.
The beach and the reserve lie at the end of a lane with no service, and the car park fills on the first fine day. We drop you at the Maison de l'île and come back at the agreed time.
