A 1554 château the municipality eventually bought
The name is recorded in 1164 as Scandens. The seigneury was split: half to the Chapter of Lausanne — passed to the Morges hospital at the Reformation — the other half to the bishop, enfeoffed to the nobles of Échandens.
The present château was built from 1554 by Ferdinand de Loys, lord of Denens and mayor of Lausanne, on an older building; reworked in the 17th and 18th centuries, it was inaugurated in 1629. Its distinction is rare in the canton: on 29 May 1978 the municipality bought it. It belongs to the inhabitants, not to a family.
Échandens has grown a great deal — two hundred inhabitants in the 18th century, nearly three thousand today — and the newer districts are far from Denges-Échandens station. That is where we come.
