An 1897 funicular between the station and the town
Cossonay's railway station is at the bottom, the town is at the top, and between the two runs a funicular — inaugurated on 28 August 1897. One thousand two hundred and twenty-eight metres, a thirteen per cent gradient, and for nearly a century a water counterbalance: the upper cabin was filled to lift the lower one. It was electrified in 1982.
The town itself is medieval. In the 11th century its castle was among the largest in the region, and the town was ringed by three successive walls, in the 11th, 13th and 14th centuries. The lords of Cossonay were a branch of the house of Grandson; the town remained Savoyard until the Bernese arrived in 1536.
